Letter to the Editor

Today, a Letter to the Editor was published in the News Advertiser regarding safety at our lake.

Below is the full letter:

To the editor:
I am a resident of Ajax concerned for the safety for all users of this town’s trail system. I have contacted my ward councillor, Pat Brown, about my concern for the manner in which some cyclists abuse the trails by speeding, failing to warn pedestrians when they are racing up behind them or responding in a discourteous manner if a pedestrian should suggest that they slow down or share the trail.
Councillor Brown outlined a few initiatives Ajax council was considering to alleviate this situation, one that she admits she and council are aware of.
The Town has prepared a bicycle-friendly brochure that outlines where and how cyclists can safely use the town’s roads and trails. It outlines appropriate bicycle etiquette that cyclists should follow; unfortunately many of them do not follow these rules and the Town appears unwilling to do anything to enforce the rules and protect the safety of all residents wishing to enjoy this unique Town asset.
My final communique from Councillor Brown began with “I’m sorry you feel that way ...” a clear indication that cyclists can continue to endanger the safety of everyone wanting to use the Town’s trail system.
